Centre for Palliative Care

Yenepoya Nursing College, a constituent college of Yenepoya University has become a Centre for Certificate Course in Essentials of Palliative Care run by Indian Association of Palliative Care (IAPC). IAPC has been conducting this course for doctors and nurses since 2007. Yenepoya Nursing College is the first training center in Dakshina Kannada.

Need: Modern medicine is competent to handle the physical problems of acute diseases. But the needs of those who have chronic, progressive or long term diseases have not been addressed by health professionals. Today as the number of aging people and incidence of oncological conditions are increased and are on the rise according to WHO, it is indeed essential to train health professionals to address the holistic care of those clients. Palliative care deals with the management of physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of such clients and their caregivers through an interdisciplinary team approach. So here we start with this endeavor to train doctors and nurses to address the issues which are of most concern to the patient in their pain and suffering.

Aim: This course aims to inculcate the principles of palliative care to improve patient care throughout the spectrum of illness through proper communication, assessment and effective management of difficult symptoms seen in chronically and terminally ill patients.

Commencement of the Course: The course will be commencing from 1st November 2014 with minimal fees. The last date is 5th November 2014.

Course Duration: It is 15 hours of contact sessions and 8 weeks of learning at home through distance education followed by evaluation. Candidate can have clinical experience in their own clinical settings.
